Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
