Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Acquiring Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Content Removal
Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.
Within moments of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Pricing
Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
