Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
